Why a travel eSIM drains your battery, and what to change
A phone abroad often loses charge faster than the same phone at home. Here is what actually causes it and the handful of settings that give the day back.
Travellers frequently notice that a phone which comfortably lasts a working day at home is at forty percent by lunchtime abroad. The eSIM is usually blamed and is rarely the cause. What changes is how hard the phone is working to stay connected, and most of that is adjustable in a couple of minutes.

Hunting for a network is the expensive part
A phone with a strong signal transmits at low power and sleeps between bursts. A phone at the edge of coverage raises transmit power and retries, and a phone with no coverage at all scans the whole band repeatedly looking for anything to attach to. That last state is the most expensive thing a modern phone does short of playing video, and it is exactly the state a traveller creates by carrying an unregistered line through a metro tunnel, a rural stretch, or the wrong side of a mountain.
The practical consequence is that airplane mode is not a defeatist setting. On a long train ride through patchy coverage, turning the radios off for an hour and back on when you arrive costs you nothing you were going to receive anyway, and it stops the phone spending that hour shouting into an empty band.
Two lines means two radios
Dual-SIM phones keep both lines registered so either can receive a call. That is the feature working correctly, and it means the radio work roughly doubles. If your home line exists on the trip only so that a bank can text you a code, it does not need to be actively hunting for a roaming partner all day in a country where it barely has one.
Two adjustments help without cutting you off. Turn data roaming off for the home line so it never carries traffic by accident, and if you genuinely do not need to be reachable on it for a stretch — a flight, a hike, a working morning — disable the line rather than leaving it searching. Re-enabling takes a moment and the phone re-registers on its own.
The unglamorous causes are usually the big ones
Outdoor screen brightness is the single largest consumer on most travel days, and a phone in bright sun with auto-brightness will run near maximum for hours. Navigation compounds it by holding the screen awake and running GPS. Turning the screen off between junctions, and using audio directions rather than watching the map, is worth more than every radio setting combined.
Background work matters too. Photo backup will happily upload a morning of high-resolution images over mobile data, and app updates will do the same. Restricting both to Wi-Fi protects the battery and the data allowance in one move. Low-power mode is worth turning on deliberately at the start of a long day rather than waiting for the phone to suggest it at twenty percent.
Battery life abroad is mostly a coverage story, not an eSIM story. Stop the phone searching when there is nothing to find, keep a second line from working harder than it needs to, and move the screen and background uploads off the critical path — and the same device that struggled to lunchtime will reach the evening.
